A Visit With Mammy

Over the week-end, Dan and I visited with his 83 year old mother.  Some people would tell you  "she's a trip", but if my mother were here she would tell you that 'she is a whole world tour!!!' She is just that much fun!!!

Before we got there, she decided that she had to "fix" us something to eat, and since she rarely cooks any more(we would rather she not) she decided to make one of her specialities for us.  She made homemade pimento-cheese, so we could have sandwiches for supper.

She has a few health issues and her hearing is going, but her mind is as sharp as a tack!!!  To say the least she doesn't miss a thing!!! I have learned so much from her over the years, and she is still teaching me!

Saturday morning, we took her to her weekly hair appointment.... she rarely misses those.  And her hair is not gray, it's platinum blonde, YES only her hairdresser knows for sure!!!  In the beauty shop she gleans a little news, and imparts it to us as we drive back to her home. The rest of the day is spent, "visiting".  She and Dan watch the Braves play baseball, and I read, then we visit a little before we return home.

Mammy has always loved to cook and entertain people, and I do mean entertain.  Sometimes she has us laughing so hard that we are crying... you know the good kind of cry.  When she was able, if we went to her house for a meal believe me you never came away hungry.  My children would tell you that their Mammy would feed you to death!!  I think this is where Karen gets her love for cooking and entertaining!!  It's not from me, I love to entertain, but not cook, so I do the "short cuts to entertaining" things.

She entertains us with her stories and updating us on  "the news" usually family news.  She plays cards or whatever with the kids and all of them enjoy it!!! We love just to watch her with the children......

The family news consist of what she has learned from Dan's brothers and sister, or her grands, or her many nieces and nephews.  Like most mothers she is the one who is in contact with "Everyone" in the family... She has graciously accepted her role as advisor, but only advises when asked. (Lord please make me more like her in that respect)  She still gets calls from her children seeking her wisdom, probably because she is not trying to dish it out without being asked.

Up until 2yrs ago, she joined us on our family vacations... the kids all loved that.  No she didn't actually go down on the beach, but she was there to enjoy the kids as much as they enjoyed her.  We really miss that!!!  Mammy was always the one to get a game going, or spur us on to "cook something good."  She is simply wicked at Scrabble, Spades and Bridge!!!

Yep!!! That's my mother-in-law.... she has always seemed just as much a mother to me as to her own children.  Praise God for Mothers and Mother-in-Laws like her..... I would love to be just like her one day!!!

I am so glad you got to have your visit with Mammy. You guys are blessed to still have her. I wish we had parents to talk to and share the latest things with. It just seems wrong that we are the oldest generation, especially Mark at only 45. I would love to have some of that homemade pimento cheese. I'll bet it was so delicious. Well, now I have read some negative reviews about the Shack. Yes, not every single thing in it is perfect, but I think the parts that helped me look at certain things are awesome. It's not the Bible, of course. Sometimes I just feel like some people are so negative. I don't believe everything in it, but it's something to think about. I am glad you guys got to stay with your honey's mom and I hope you had a relaxing weekend. Love ya, Trish
