More insights from Pastor and writer Tony Evans...
Why have the Jewish priests dip their feet in the flood-waters of the Jordan River, so the people of Israel could cross? (Joshua 3) Why not just split the waters the way He did when Moses stretched out his rod over the Red Sea?
Why have the soldiers of Israel walk around the walls of Jericho quietly for six days, then have the priests blow their horns? (Joshua 6) Why not just bless the troops with supernatural ability to defeat the city militarily?
Why have Naaman the distinguished Syrian general, dip himself in the Jordan River seven times in order to heal him of leprosy? (2 Kings 5:10-14) Why not just have someone lay hands on him?
Why give a blind man sight by smearing dirt and saliva in his eyes, then having him go wash his face? (John 9) Why not just heal him with a touch and a word, and let him go his way?
All of these things must have seemed strange to the people who were given the commands... these incidents show us that God does things sometimes in strange and mysterious ways, that sometimes make us wonder if He knows what He is doing.
In each case God gave specific and seemingly bizarre instructions .... instructions that required exact obedience. Why?? He wanted them to see they had nothing to lose, and everything to gain.
We need to remember that our Heavenly Father is infinite in his wisdom and in His personal knowledge of each of His children. He knows precisely what it takes to test, deepen and refine our faith. More often than not our faith grows against the backdrop of things we don't fully understand, and not in the context of the things we do.

I think He likes to mix things up. He probably thinks we would get to used to the same old same old. It's hard to understand why He does what He does, but I guess the main thing is doing what He says. Listening and following directions. That seems to be a huge challenge for some of us. We like to do 'our own thing'. I pray He molds me into what I need to be for Him. I want to be used and glorify Him, not Trish.
